Note: Trimm was a Miami Bass hip-hop duo composed of Lady Tigra and Bunny D, two women from Kendall, Florida (an area of Dade County, slightly south-west of Miami). They recorded three albums for Hot Productions: Grab It! in 1988 (when they were eighteen), Drop That Bottom in 1989 (which led to The Source naming them “Hip-Hop Goddesses of the Month”), and Groovy in 1991.

Note: “Televators” is a single from the album De-Loused in the Comatorium by the band The Mars Volta. The cryptic lyrics most likely represent the moment at which the character “Cerpin Taxt” (based on a real life friend of the band, Julio Venegas) decides to take his own life. It is very much a ballad, and its overall quiet nature stands in stark contrast to the hard rock of the rest of the album (especially that of the immediately-following closing track “Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt.”)

Note: M.I.A. explained that “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja” was a track she used to dance to when she was a child. “My mum used to hire me out when I was a kid as a party buffer. It was my track that I used to do my routine to. I had a little tape recorder, and a cloak and a cardboard cut out guitar, and that was my joint.” Describing the recording and writing processes, she revealed that she had already recorded the strings and other parts of the song in India, but initially didn’t attempt to do “Jimmy” when she was with co-producer Switch, explaining “I had to be drunk enough to be that disco. It all came together that week.” Arulpragasam wrote the song about an invitation she received from a journalist while working in Liberia, to meet him whilst covering a genocide tour.
